Abide With Me

D  A         D        G        A   D
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;

D            G        E             A
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.

D    A     D       G                 E
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

A            D        G  D    A    D
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

  1. How about a third line like this??? The Em is still there and it’s easy to play.

    D A D G Em
    When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

  2. I really think this version is great for guitar, it cuts out all the unecessary chords that the guitar doesn’t need to play.

    One of two of the D’s would maybe be better as an Bm but apart from that this is great for guitar.

    I have a PDF version for free to download with a little more chords than this, but if anyone is interested.

  3. How often does this get updated?? anyone know?

  4. You need an advanced musician to decode the chords to this hymn.
    The above chords are too limited and simple.
    The original hymn is amazingly beautiful.
    It would be nice to have two levels of chording: beginner and advanced.
    I will detect the original chords from the piano. If you want an advanced set of chords, please email me.
